Roop Kumar Rathod was born to Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod who himself was an eminent personality in classical music and had the credit of training the likes of Kalyanji Anandji and Manhar. As music was in his blood, Roop started learning tabla at a very tender age. With time his talent of tabla playing reached its zenith and he got the chance of performing with the greats like Anup Jalota and Pankaj Udhas. He gave up tabla playing in the year 1984 and it was the same time that he started on the journey of his singing career.

Roop was given a break by Laxmikant Pyarelal in his film called Angaar. He also sung for Sashikant Nair and Nadeem Shravan, but this all was unable to give Roop the limelight he deserved. Fortune showered on him when he agreed to sing for Border. “To Chalun” and “Sandesein Ate Hain”, made him a household name after the release of Border. These two songs gave him such a response that after this he never looked back. After this he had sung for many Bollywood movies. Some of his popular hits are: -

He believes that learning is a process that never ends and so also at this stage of life, he is learning Ghazal singing from Ustad Niyaz Ahmad Khan.
